How Weighted Grades are Calculated

In a weighted grading system, different assessment categories (homework, projects, quizzes, exams) contribute a fixed percentage to your final class grade.

The Weighted Grade Formula

Overall Grade = (Grade₁ × Weight₁ + Grade₂ × Weight₂ + ... + Gradeₙ × Weightₙ) / Sum of Weights

If your weights add up to 100%, dividing by the sum of weights is the same as dividing by 100.

Example Calculation

• Homework: 90% grade, worth 20% of class grade

• Midterm: 80% grade, worth 30% of class grade

• Final Exam: 85% grade, worth 50% of class grade

Calculation: (90 × 20 + 80 × 30 + 85 × 50) / 100 = (1800 + 2400 + 4250) / 100 = 8450 / 100 = 84.5%

How is a weighted grade calculated?
Multiply the grade of each category (e.g., Homework: 90% grade, 20% weight) by its weight percentage (expressed as a decimal: 0.20), sum these values, and divide by the total weight sum. Formula: Overall Grade = Sum of (Grade * Weight) / Sum of Weights.
What happens if my course weights do not sum to 100%?
If the total weight is less than 100%, it means some categories are not yet graded. The calculator will find your current grade based only on what has been graded so far (normalized), and forecast your minimum grade (assuming 0% on the rest) and maximum grade (assuming 100% on the rest).
Can category grades exceed 100%?
Yes. If your teacher offers extra credit, your grade in a category (or your overall grade) can exceed 100%. The calculator supports grades higher than 100%.
How do I find the weight of assignments in my course?
