Understanding Letter Grades

Letter grades are converted to grade points on a 4.0 scale:

  • A+ / A: 4.0 (Excellent)
  • A-: 3.7 (Very Good)
  • B+: 3.3 (Good)
  • B: 3.0 (Above Average)
  • B-: 2.7 (Average)
  • C+ and below: 2.3-0.0 (Below Average to Fail)

GPA Calculation Formula

The GPA is calculated as a weighted average:

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Credits)

Example: If you have three courses:

  • Course 1: A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12.0
  • Course 2: B+ (3.3) × 4 credits = 13.2
  • Course 3: A- (3.7) × 3 credits = 11.1

GPA = (12.0 + 13.2 + 11.1) / (3 + 4 + 3) = 36.3 / 10 = 3.63

What's a Good GPA?

  • 3.5-4.0: Excellent (Dean's List, Honors)
  • 3.0-3.5: Good (Above Average)
  • 2.5-3.0: Average
  • 2.0-2.5: Below Average
  • Below 2.0: At Risk (may need academic probation review)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Grade Point?
A grade point is a numerical value assigned to a letter grade (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0). These values are multiplied by course credits to calculate your overall GPA.
How do you convert letter grades to grade points?
Most schools follow a standard scale where A+/A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Check your institution's handbook for their specific letter-grade-to-points mapping.
How do credit hours factor into grade points?
Credit hours represent the weight of a course. The total grade points earned for a course equals the grade point value of the letter grade multiplied by the course's credit hours.
