Your Cumulative CGPA
Understanding SGPA vs CGPA
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the grade point average for a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average across all completed semesters.
Formula
CGPA = (Sum of SGPA × Credits) ÷ Total Credits
This weighted average ensures that semesters with more credits have proportionally more impact on your overall CGPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is CGPA calculated from semester SGPAs?
CGPA is calculated as the credit-weighted average of SGPAs: CGPA = Sum of (SGPA * Semester Credits) / Total Credits of all semesters. If all semesters have equal credits, you can simply take the mathematical average of the SGPAs.
Does a backlog or fail grade affect SGPA and CGPA?
Yes. A fail grade usually yields 0 grade points for that subject, lowering both your SGPA for that semester and your cumulative CGPA. Clearing the backlog replaces the 0 with the new passing grade point.
Can SGPA be higher than CGPA?
Yes, if your academic performance improves in a particular semester, the SGPA of that semester will be higher than your cumulative CGPA.
